Villa in the countryside of Modica with an experimental vineyard of about a thousand vines, 106 olive trees, a citrus grove, a 6 × 12 m pool and a cellar dug into the rock: a 1983 house on four levels, built to earthquake-resistant standards.
The land was made cultivable with terracing and planting: trenches cut into the rock for the trees, 4,500 m³ of soil brought in and 700 metres of dry-stone walls marking the boundary and supporting the fence. An avenue lined with two rows of stone pines leads to the house.
The experimental vineyard, protected by anti-bird netting, includes white grapes (Glera, Chardonnay, Trebbiano Toscano, Malvasia Bianca di Candia), red grapes (Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon) and table grapes (Black Hamburg Muscat, Cardinal, Regina, Italia). The 106 olive trees along the fence act as a windbreak and give privacy. Behind the house is a small citrus grove with oranges, clementines, mandarins and lemons, plus a centuries-old carob tree and some walnut trees. Drinking water comes from a shared well; according to the owner it is mineral water.
The 6 × 12 m pool, with diving board, ladder and automatic recirculation and filtration, is surrounded by a sun terrace and lawn.
The house:
• Ground floor (140 m²): two bedrooms, two bathrooms, living room, kitchen and veranda; a central fireplace feeds the radiators; fine wooden window frames.
• Basement (65 m²): tavern room with solid fir tables and benches, wood oven and a craft-beer corner; access by outside stairs and a ramp for firewood.
• Lower level, six metres below ground: a domed winemaking room with barrels, vats and a hydraulic press.
• Final level (7.35 m²): a room for bottle-ageing wine, especially traditional-method sparkling wine, at a constant 18–20 °C.
